San Lorenzo (Secondary)
As we explained in the meeting held in February, during the IGCSE exam period, the timetable for S4 continues unaltered (the only exception being when there is an IGCSE exam). Therefore, attendance is compulsory for all students. Should a student be absent, this absence has to be justified in writing and handed in to the form tutor.
I am writing to inform you that Parents Evening will take place on Thursday 17th May 2012 4.15-6.45 pm. During this time you will only be able to see any S3 teacher.
S3 students will face their end of year exams from Monday 18thth of June until the 22. These are important exams half way through the IGCSE course and the grades give an indication of the level the student has at this stage. The grades gained in these exams also count towards the global mark of each subject of term 1 of S4. Students must start revising for these exams now. S3 teachers are now beginning to focus of revision lessons and past papers, but students need to supplement these with work at home if they want to be successful.
The International Award
Last weekend eighteen students from S6c successfully completed their expedition for the Bronze Award. The group spent two days hiking in the mountains and one night camping and cooking. Despite the adversities encountered over the course of the weekend, all the students demonstrated tremendous determination and resilience. Thanks to their problem solving, communication and teamwork skills they were able to work together as one to face the challenges which arose in the true spirit of the award.
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK and international school pupils. Last academic year over 600,000 pupils from 4000 schools took part in the three individual challenges, the UK's biggest national maths competitions
The money raised will be destined to Operation Wallacea Trust charity number 1078362 http://www.opwall.com/(biodiversity and conservation management research organization running projects in Indonesia and other countries around the world). Jairo Martínez Lozano, former S6 student last year, does voluntary work for this organization. Jairo will give a talk to P6 to S5 in the theatre on Monday 26th March 8.40 and will explain to students his work for Wallacea Trust
The International Award
In the secondary department we have been running the International Award successfully for the past three years. The award, also referred to as The Duke of Edinburgh Award, is offered to students who choose to follow the British Curriculum in S6.
Last term the students' donation to the NGO SVG Ghana http://svg-volunteers.blogspot.com/ amounted 555 Euros which have been used to provide 2 of the poorest school in the country with 6 computers and Internet connection (please see attached letters from the NGO and the 2 schools). Thank you all for your contribution.
Attached you will find files in which detailed information about scholarships and loans is supplied. Studying in a British university is a dream which nonetheless can turn into reality. Please be aware that individual universities also offer alternative sources of financial aid. Universities need to be contacted individually for more details.
One of the aspects the school deems important is school uniform. In the last few weeks it has been noticeable that some students are coming to school with incorrect school uniform. The following is what the school’s uniform consists of:
Six weeks to go! Yes, only six weeks left before your IGCSE French oral exam starts! 6 topics = 6 weeks. In order to be 100% ready try and revise one topic a week and don't forget your grammar and verbs! Use the list of websites Mrs. Rabanowirz gave you and come and practice! Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes are for you! And remember, no early Easter Holidays, the exam is between March 26th and 30th!!
Though mass-media you may have heard about the plans the Spanish educational authorities are developing to change the Spanish education system. The Canterbury School, being a British school, has never been normally affected by the continuous changes the Spanish education system has been going through. And when any change has affected the school, the Canterbury School has adapted its structure to the changes.
This is a school day in which all students will be involved in games and activities organized by S5 students. These activities promote important skills such team work and participation in shared activities. Students must come to school with school uniform and they will get changed into costumes here. Students must bring their books to school just in case it rains in which case there will be normal lessons. S6 students will be taught normal lessons.
School rules. In general students are bringing the correct uniform to school. However, some students are bringing trainers with winter uniform, when they should be wearing shoes. Also some students are wearing jumpers of different colors to the navy blue which is the right one. In addition some girls are also coming to school with polished nails, which is not permitted. Please help us reinforcing this rule at home
In the next few days S2 students will receive their options form (attached and downloadable, both in English and Spanish). Students need to return the completed form by Monday 13th February 2012.
