This weekend the final phase of the minibasket competition was played in the ‘La Montaña’ sports hall in Galdar.
The boys’ last match was full of excitement with extra time and a winning triple in the very last seconds. It was an absolutely fantastic match.
Boys: Canterbury, IBSA Gran Canaria, Claret Gran Canaria, La Paterna Gran Canaria.
Friday: Canterbury – La Paterna G.C. (35 – 30). Our players did not play their best game and this was partly due to the good defence tactics of the opposing players, Eventually however our players pulled their socks up and the Lions won an expected victory.
Saturday: Canterbury – IBSA Gran Canaria (40 – 36). A very close and difficult game against rival players considerable taller ( it’s the tallest team in the group) The first half was neck and neck and the score was 21-22 at the interval so it was still anybody’s game.. Our team played an excellent third quarter (10-2) which set us on the path to victory although in the final period the game was more equal and our opponents caught up three points (9-12). Our boys played a great match with Gabriel scoring 2 triples at important moments, one especially outstanding as he had a huge rival player on top of him, which put us in the lead when the game was equal.
Sunday: Claret Gran Canaria – Canterbury (44 – 44 prórroga) y (50 – 53).

Llega el verano y el mejor momento para MEJORAR TU BALONCESTO Y DIVERTIRTE.

The Lions preinfantil basketball team has done a great job this year. Ernis’ boys were the best of the four teams competing in the final games for the Island Championship.
On Friday evening the first match took place. Canterbury Idecnet – Heidelberg (58-31).
On Saturday the second match was played: Canterbury Idecnet – Vecindario (53-27).
On Sunday morning the long awaited match took place: Ciudad de Telde – Canterbury Idecnet (25-35).

In our recent minibasket championship, one of the Real Madrid’s players Ignacio Iriarte Paz, was an ex Canterbury pupil whose parents had moved to Madrid for personal reasons. Meeting up with old school pals was an emotional moment and all the boys concerened thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the tournament. In the K1 photo taken at Christmas 1997 you can see Ignacio on the left (player no 13 of Real Madrid who were second in the Spanish Campionships) on the right Javier Rivero Pérez (Nº 20 of Canterbury Lions) and behind (in white) Dani Pérez (Champion of the Canary Islands and member of the Canarian Selection Team). See more photos here.

Her enthusiasm, dedication and above all determination to improve has enabled Ana Henriquez to be the first Canterbury Lions player to be chosen to represent the Canary Islands team. She is 1.65 worth of pure sportswoman makes Ann a great team player with good technical competence an outlook for the game unusual in players of her age. She has thoroughly enjoyed representing the Canary Islands together with players from other clubs. We hope that you will carry on in the same way Ana and have the opportunity to enjoy similar experiences in following years. Congratulations Ana!

The Lions’ Second International Minibasket Tournament will take place between the 11th and 14th May. The following clubs will participate: Canterbury, Houston-USA, Nuryana, Heidelberg, Real Madrid, IBSA Gran Canaria, Vecindario and Santa Cruz in the boys’ category and Canterbury, Basket Tara, Puerto del Arrecife and Nuryana in the girls’ category. We wish all the players the best of luck and hope that all our teams’ fans will come along to the Juan Beltran Sierra Sports Hall that weekend to cheer them on. Look up www.canterburylions.com .

Against the emotive background of the ‘Guindos de Unicaja Sports Hall, the final match of the Southern Division was played and in a sensational match applauded by an enthusiastic public, the Gran Canarian winners, the Canterbury Lions, were acclaimed champions and are through to the Grand Schools final to be played in Madrid. (see news).
The Canterbury Lions played a great game and in spite of the atmosphere created by numerous fans of the team from Granada beat the Agustinos by 70 to 53.
Now they are all out for the Grand Final Trophy… but first they have to beat the champions of the Central Division, the tremendous ‘Liceo Francés Búhos’.

The school has recently had the honour of a visit from Jim Moran , Kennedy Winston and Victor Baldo ., three outstanding players from the ACB team ‘ CB Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas ’, as our boys have won the first round of the Schools’ Championship competition. The three Stars spent all day with our pupils who revelled in seeing them play, listening to their advice and enjoying their company. We hope our team will carry on winning their matches in the Schools Championships and have future visits from similar players of such high reputation.

The boys Canterbury team have taken one more step ahead in Southern District of the ACB Schools Competition. Our green and yellow players showed their mettle in the University Sports Hall in Tafira by beating Portaceli, the winners of the competition organised by the Caja San Fernando. Santi López’ team was dominant from the very start of the match and the final store ended in a comfortable 62-43. Unfortunately our girls’ Cadete’ team was not so lucky and was beaten by the Junior team from ‘Virgen de la Milagrosa’.

A very exciting, tough match was fought last Saturday between our girls CANTERBURY “B” and Caja canarias ( 20 – 18 ) when a large number of enthusiastic supporters around the court were able to enjoy our first victory over the Cajacanarias.
Our girls have improved tremendously during their short existence and as time has gone by have won many matches against different clubs in Gran Canaria but this victory is special because it is an indication of the high level reach they have reached, as the Cajacanarias is the only club that we had never beaten.
Congratulations to all the players in Canterbury “B” (Years 4-5 -´P3-P4) for their great game against the Cajacanarias in the girls Preminibasket benjamín league match.

Alter various changes and cancellations, the dates for the Schools Tournament matches have finally been arranged.

For the last five years we have taken advantage of the long Easter break to organise the Canterbury Lions Basketball Campus. This year the 5th meeting will take place from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th of April. Unfortunately the number of places is limited and we advise all those interested to register now. Registration forms can be obtain at inscripción .
The Campus will be directed by the North American trainer CHRIS ROMINE, who is the Head Trainer of Georgetown HS, USA. Chris is well known for his great enthusiasm for the game and his attention to detail. His players are noted as being excellent shooters and very effective in 1x1 techniques. .

Our boys CANTERBURY LIONS team played the American School of Las Palmas in their first match of the competition. It was a very comfortable game for our players from the very beginning: there was really a considerable difference between the two teams.

The American School team played a defensive 2-1-2 match throughout the whole game whereas the CANTERBURY LIONS used a continuous individual defensive technique in ½ court. At half time the score was 30-0 in the Lions favour. The last two quarters were very relaxed and the final score was 60-7.

For the first time this year our club has been invited to take part in the National Schools Championship ( campeonato nacional de series colegiales ), organised by the ACB (Junior category). Almost 300 schools throughout Spain, divided into 18 divisions – one for each ACB team- take part in these championships which encourages almost 5.000 boys and girls to practice basketball. The boys will begin on February 8th and the girls on February 9th (dates to be confirmed).

From the 23rd to the 29th January more federated league basketball matches are being played. The minibasket and preminibasket teams Hill play in the Sports Stadium San Fernando-Maspalomas (turn into the road called ‘ Viuda de Franco’ at the ‘Mesón and turn right at the 2nd roundabout). Please TURN UP FOR THE MATCHES AND ARRIVE ON TIME so that everything goes well and you don’t let the other members of the team down. For detailed information about the games please consult the match timetables Web.

In the photon the left, our placer Omar Esparza is in a thoughtful mood during one of the matches.

* CANARIAN CADETE BOYS TEAM: Champion of Spain. Our player Pablo Quevedo (Canterbury Telde) was one of the team’s most important players during the championship and spent many minutes on the court..
* CANARIAN CADETE GIRLS TEAM: Classified 11th. The team improved continually and played well. Our player Omayra Vera (Canterbury Tara) is one of the few players of the first year in the team.
* CANARIAN INFANTIL BOYS TEAM: Classified 4th. Our player Eliézer Santana (Canterbury Telde) was an important member of the team due to his strength and versatility.

On the 8th, 9th and 10th of December the tournament to select the Grand Canarian teams in the boys and girls ‘Minibasket’ category took place in the Vega de San José Sports Hall.
We would like to congratulate our ‘Minibasket’ players (Ana Henríquez, Alejandro Pérez, Héctor Suárez, Luis López, David González and Gabriel Navarro-preminibasket-), who have been selected to represent the boys and girls Grand Canarian teams for their great performance throughout the Tournament.

Recently our Canterbury Lions Sports Club has made a sponsorship agreement with with Arunet , a local computer and computer services firm. .From now on our boys preminibasket team, which is the actual island champion. will be called Canterbury-Arunet Rodrigo García and Manuel Prego were the representatives responsible for signing the agreement. (see photo).

Last week the Lions Sports Club reached a sponsorship agreement with the Telecommunications Company Idecnet. From now on our ‘Preinfantil’, team, the present champions of the whole of the Canary Islands, will be called ‘Canterbury Idecnet’. Rodrigo Garcia and Juan Manuel Castellano were the representatives selected to sign the agreement. (see photo)

The time has come! We have all been waiting impatiently for this moment to arrive.

The first Basketball League matches in the ‘Cadete’ and ‘Infantile Masculine’ categories will take place this weekend
