Year 2006/2007

NO FALTES.

1. San Isidro – Canterbury. Brillante Triunfo del Canterbury preminibasket masculino (P5).

On Wednesday, 25th April our annual Senior Athletics competition took place at the sports centre ‘Ciudad Deportiva’ de Gran Canaria’. About 400 pupils from P6 to Lower Sixth took part in the meeting and did their best to ensure the good performance of their ‘House’ or team, Bath, Glasgow, Lincoln and York in the eight different athletic events. York were the final winners with 1358 points....

This Canterbury Lions player was the most outstanding scorer in the Grand Canarian Island Minibasket Tournament with a total of 69 points scored throughout the entire competition where both our girls and boys team finished in fourth place. All the teams taking part were very evenly matched with the winner decided in the last few moments of the games, unfortunately against our players. We would all like to congratulate Gabriel and the other members of our boys and girls minibasket teams for their dedication and hard work throughout the season and hope to see them taking part in the competitions next year.

It was an evening of mixed fortunes when the boys and girls Canary Islands’ Finals of the Schools Championships were played yesterday. While our boys, full of energy and enthusiasm, beat Guanarteme in a great match, our girls succumbed to Heidelberg without showing the fight they usually have. Congratulations boys; we are all eagerly awaiting the next round of the Schools Championships and hope to travel to the mainland to cheer you on!

Several Canterbury Lions players have appeared in the well-known Spanish basketball magazine ‘GIGANTES’ as they played for Gran Canaria in the ‘Minicopa del Rey’.. In total there were six players from Canterbury School (Guillermo Alonso, Pedro Quintana, Daniel Pérez, Alejandro Pérez, Omar Esparza and Ricardo García) who all played outstandingly; this makes us one of the schools with the largest number of players at the meeting. Well done boys!

Five players from our club were selected to play for the Grand Canarian team which took part in the prestigious Islands Minibasket Tournament: two played in the girls’ team and three in the boys’ team.
Both teams gained first place in their separate categories in the tournament. Congratulations ...

From the 3rd to the 8th of January the Spanish ‘Infantile’ and ‘Cadete’ championships took place in the Bay of Cadiz. One of our pupils in Year 11, Jesus López Santana played brilliantly for the Canarian ‘Cadete’ team that beat the selection from Catalunia in the finals 82-67 and consequently won the championship. We also wish to congratulate three other pupils from the school, Omar Esparza, Ricardo Garcia and Daniel Perez who played for the Canarian ‘infantil’ team and Alejandro Sanchez, the school’s Physical Education teacher, who was officially appointed organiser for the ‘infantil’ Canarian team.

Joan Pau Pilán, the winner.

The Winterthur Barcelona player, Joan Pau Pilán wone the ‘triples’ competition which took place on Friday in the Paco Álvarez Sports Pavillion. Pilán had a hard time beating Dani Pérez, from ‘Gran Canaria Canterbury’, who only lost when they had to play extra time had to be played.

Joan Pau Pilán got through to the final after winning easily in the second round where he obtained ten points. The Gran Canarian player Dani Perez fought with him for the cup after obtaining 7 points in this round. Oriol Guerrero (DKV Joventut) and Jaka Doljak (Olimpija Ljubljana) were fighting it out with them for first place.

In the final Dani Perez ...

The Lions girls’ ‘preminibenjamín’ team came second in the final phase of the Grand Canarian Island Championship. Our players showed enthusiasm, fair play and optimism in the Sports Hall in Vecindario and only succumbed in the final match by eight points. Congratulations girls for a great year’s effort!

During the final phase of the minibasket regional championship, our players gained a well earned second place after winning all their matches in their group and succumbing only to the powerful Unelco from Tenerife in the great final game. In this match Alejandro Perez was outstanding as he scored 23 points. Our players who had been previously won the Island of Grand Canary championship beat all their opponents in the first matches: Loyola, Virgen del Mar and Dominicas Laguna and classified for the final as first in their group and unbeaten. Our warmest congratulations to all the team players for their great achievement (second in the regional championships)

Last weekend our lions won two golds for the club: our boys ‘preinfantil’ team were champions of the whole of the Canarian Autonomic Region and our boys minibasket team champions of the Island of Grand Canary. The ‘preintantil’ team beat Heidelberg (57-69), Nuryana (49-69), Santa Cruz (60-65) and San Isidro (67-65). The most difficult game was against Santa Cruz (Dani Perez scored 31 points) due basically to the difference in size. In the final against the much vaunted San Isidro which has not lost a single game this year, our players knew how to take advantage of a tremendous Omar Esparza (32 points and 20 rebounds) despite an extremely hostile atmosphere in the San Isidro court.

In the minibasket league, our boys knew how to handle Heidelberg, IBSA and Claret Gran Canaria. The girls’ team unfortunately lost the final against Caja Canarias after performing well against Tara and Vecindario.
