2nd Term

This year a camping trip has been organised for 2º Bacherillato (Year 13) on the 16th, 17th and 18th of June.

The pupils will stay at the ‘Cortijo de Huerts’ hostel which is located in the highest part of the San Bartolome de Tirajana area, very close to ‘Leones de la Pez’ where there is a perfect healthy, rural environment for recreational and sporting activities. The hostel has a kitchen, dining room, toilets and showers and simple but comfortable sleeping accommodation on mattresses placed on the floor in wooden cabins.

Last week in the new theatre, the S1 students performed their group rhythm exercises which they have been working on all term. They had to compose and perform a musical piece based solely on rhythm; an idea explored successfully in the production of ‘Stomp’, where a whole range of unusual instruments are played.
As well as being assessed by Mr Clarke, their was a ‘jury’ made up of 6 P6 students and Galo and Miss Maria, who decided that the best performance came from 5 S1C girls – Montse Fumanal Pérez, Ayla Lorenzo Montesdeoca, Sofia Herrera Sanchez, Julía Rodriguez Fillol and Smara Alonso Martin, who set their piece in a School Library.

Rohit Vaswani, a former student of Canterbury School, was among the guests of honour at the 20th birthday celebrations of the Cambridge IGCSE held in Cambridge U.K.

Rohit was the first student in Spain to win the yearly 3000 pounds (4.335 euros) award offered by Cambridge for the most outstanding A level grades and contribution to society. He was awarded this distinction in 2001 and the prize has provided a welcome assistance during his student years in the United Kingdom.
In September, Rohit joined representatives from IGCSE schools across the globe, students past and present and members of the original Cambridge IGCSE development team to toast the most popular international qualification in the world for 16 year old students.

Parents meeting ( Year 11 - 4º de E. S. O.).
Next Tuesday, 21st March, there will be a meeting for the parents of all pupils in Year 11 (4º E.S.O.) both to explain the arrangements for this year’s I.G.C.S.E. examinations in May and to give details of the courses of Six Form studies available to their children for the academic year 2006 – 7. The meeting will be held in the dining room in the Secondary Department and will begin promptly at 4.00 p.m. We hope all parents concerned will attend.

We are now busy preparing our annual camping trip for pupils of P5. This will take place in ‘El Pinillo’, in the valley of Arguineguin in the South of the island. This is a beautiful spot and provides a safe, healthy environment where eleven year olds can enjoy themselves taking part in the outdoor activities provided. The camp will be organised by ‘Baikal Aventura’, an organisation which has a well established reputation in this field.

For a detailed description of the activities organised please consult programa de actividades.

This year’s Carnaval de Las Palmas is now with us and we are looking forward to celebrating it with our pupils. Our carnival parties will take place on Friday 24th February and are only aimed at the students.
The school will close the following Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th February for the usual carnival holiday
We do hope all our pupils will join in the festivities appropriately and help to make the celebration a great success

P6 students have been studying friction and air resistance in science. To help them understand this they constructed parachutes and tested them to judge whose was the best.

As all the pupils in S4 have now finished their obligatory schooling, every year we offer them the opportunity of a school trip together when they can share experiences, have a taste of adventure and generally enjoy themselves. This year the trip organised by Viajes Barceló will take them to the Pyrenees in Cataluña and to Port Aventura .

Next Friday, 3rd February, pupils in the Upper Sixth are going to the Universidad de Las Palmas to listen to a talk giving them information about the different University careers.
The talk will take place in the University auditorium: our students will leave the school about 9,20 and return around 11.30.

We hope everyone has enjoyed the long Christmas break and has returned thoroughly rested and refreshed for the new Spring term. Our first day back was unfortunately very wet and cold for all departments: in San Lorenzo torrential rain poured down continuously and the little ones in Ruben Dario had a grim, grey indoors. In the Primary School in Maspalomas the beginning of term was even worse as everyone was sent home soon after arrival because the road to Palmitas Park was flooding and becoming potentially dangerous.

The Central Office for Safety and Emergencies (DGSE), because of the predictions of the National Weather Institute (INM), declared a rain and snow warning on Sunday, 8th January at throughout the whole Canarian Autonomic Region.

After a short interlude, more heavy showers.
