On Thursday evening, 15th June, the new school theatre ‘The Chaucer’ was officially inaugurated by Peter Nevitt, our Grand Canarian British Consul who has just retired from his post this June. Last week, students from P6 to S2 and their parents were treated to an afternoon of rock music in the new Chaucer Theatre when the S2 students performed in their rock groups as part of their music assessment for the term. Pupils played tunes from different bands and different generations. As well as being assessed by Mr Clarke, there was a panel of pupil and teacher judges who decided that the best performances were by Queen, Aerosmith and Oasis. The photograph is of the winning Queen members – Ruth, Carolina, Ester, Cristina and Elena. On Thursday 8th June children from 2º to 5º competed in the ESCIS Junior Sports Day. The children competed against children from the British School, Oakley College and the American School. Everyone did their best and Canterbury won both the girls and the boys competitions. That meant we were also the overall winners! Congratulations to all who competed and thank you to Miss Vivienne and Miss Eu for their hard work.
On Tuesday 6th June K3 went on their final trip to Playa de Alcaravaneras. Lots of parents came along. The children had a great time playing in the sea, building sandcastles and playing in the park. Miss Emma spent all morning in the sea, Miss Maria organized relay races and Miss Ginny and Miss Fabi made sure that everybody was safe. The weather was lovely. It wasn’t too hot! There was a lovely picnic for lunch, and by the time everybody got back to school they were really tired! It was a wonderful day.
We celebrated Canary Island day in the Infant Department in Ruben Dario with an exhibition of Canarian wrestling when our youngest pupils could both enjoy themselves and learn a few of the basic rules of our national sport.
During this term a specialist ICT room with 25 new computers has been opened in the primary department for our younger pupils. (P1-P5), This is in addition to the computers already installed in the different classrooms and is similar to the two computer rooms in the Secondary Department. All the computers are connected to the school network and consequently have direct access to all the services this offers.
On Monday 31st May our schools in Las Palmas and Maspalomas celebrated the Canary Day. The children all came to school dressed beautifully in their traditional Canarian costumes.
The students at the Canterbury School took the their Art IGCSE this year and we opted for the Interpretive Art section. This counts for 50% of their final grade for Art. The other 50% is for their coursework.
Year 2 pupils (P1) visited the Library in the Plaza de las Ranas in Las Palmas and listened to the librarians telling them stories about food and animals. The librarians also explained what a library is all about, how it works and how the books are classified. At the end of their visit, our pupils were invited to go along to the story telling sessions which take place every Friday at 5.30 and the story telling marathon to be held on May 19th. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip!
The 30th May is Canary Island Day and, as usual the Junior Department will be celebrating the occasion. All parents are invited to come along to celebrate with us and enjoy some typically Canarian snacks from 10.00 in the morning.
If any parents would like to run a stall please contact Miss Lindsay and tell her all about it. If you would like to contribute to the party and bring along some real Canarian products we would be most grateful; just take them directly to the kitchen on Friday 26th or Monday 29th.

Three of our pupils won prizes in the writing competition organised by the Colegio Claret and which took place at Canterbury School. The prizes include a commemorative diploma, 30 euros and a set of books. Congratulations to the winners and remember that many great authors began their career by winning prizes at school.
A group of S4 (Year 11) pupils have just returned after a week’s trip to Germany where they stayed with the families of the German boys and girls who will be coming to Las Palmas during April. They thoroughly enjoyed speaking German in real life situations and found the excursions they made during their stay both interesting and informative. For most of them it was their first physical contact with snow and the timetable of the German educational system but they quickly adjusted to both with a mixture of interest, willingness and stoicism. They are determined that their German friends will take back equally good memories of their visit to Las Palmas just after the Easter vacation.
