2nd Term


On Wednesday 25 April at 4.00 p.m, the Heads of Sixth Form and Upper School. Mr Tomas and Mr Bam Bamber, are meeting with all parents of pupils in S4 (4º ESO) to explain both the arrangements for the forthcoming IGCSE examinations and our organisation of sixth form studies. K2D´s assembly retold the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children acted out the story and also sang a song at the end. Lots of parents and grand parents came to watch.


On Wednesday and Thursday the Primary Department put on two performances of the show Oliver. Every child from First grade to Fifth grade was involved and the children performed fantastically! The acting was wonderful, the singing beautiful and the dances were amazing.

Thank you to Mr. Leatt for all his hard work with the actors, to Mr. Harvey and Miss Ali for practising with the choir, to Octavio for helping sort out the Power point presentation and to all the teachers for working so hard with their classes.

K1B. went to the farm and we had a lovely time together feeding the animals and we all had a nice packed lunch.

K1E had a lovely day at Tio Isidrio Fram. We planted lettuce, saw lots of animals and we were able to touch and feed them. Our favourite animal was the rabbit, which we were all able to cuddle, but we thought the pigs were a bit smelly!!!


Two Canterbury pupils have received prizes in the annual essay competition organised by the Claret school in which pupils from various schools in Las Palmas participated. This year the theme for the competition was an essay relating to the past, present and future of the Canary Islands. Esther Lidia Sánchez from S3B and Alba Cuéllar from S1B have been awarded diplomas and a selection of books for the highly imaginative and descriptive quality of their well written compositions. On the last day of February, Canterbury Maspalomas celebrated its Carnival with an all day event full of fun, activities, song and dance. Children and staff all dressed up and had a very enjoyable time.


On the 6th, 7th and 8th of March 5th Grade visited Las Canteras beach as part of their study on COASTS. They learned about the history and formation of the beach as well as participating in educational games concerning environmental awareness and being a responsible tourist.


Eduardo, a former year 13 student in 2005-2006,
received the University of Cambridge award for the student in Spain with the most outstanding Cambridge A level results. Delegates from the University presented him with a Diploma and a cheque for his first year of Higher Education studies in Great Britain. The ceremony took place in the Beatriz Hotel in Fuengirola (Malaga). Eduardo was accompanied by his family as well as the Head of Sixth Form at Canterbury, Mr Pedro Tomás. On Tuesday 6th February 2007 all of K2 went to the Crocodillo Park. We left a wet Las Palmas and travelled by coach. We saw lots of different animals and practised naming all the animals we saw in English. We were very well behaved and we all had a great time.


This morning a group of S4 (year 11) students smiled happily at the camera
just before they boarded the plane for their exchange visit to Germany The
German students visited us last term and spent a week with their hosts and their families here in Gran Canaria, visiting different parts of the island and enjoying our November weather. Now our pupils are travelling to Munich (with more clothing than their German friends) on the return visit. They are all looking forward to meeting their German pen pals again and are very excited about spending a week in a different country, in a different school
and using a different language. !Viel Spass¡ to you all. !Bis bald¡

On 05/03/2007 the digital newspaper “CANARIAS AL DIA” published an article on our sixth form pupil Ágata Mata Rodríguez, on her success in the XXth National Chemistry Olympic.

During February children from Canterbury Maspalomas went on an excursion to the Auditorium in Las Palmas to attend an orchestral event performed by the symphonic orchestra of Las Palmas. We watched and listened to 'El Carnaval de los animales' and had a wonderful time.


On Friday 23rd February children from class p3B did an excellent assembly in the Chaucer theatre. The theme for their assembly was Carnival around the world.

Their enthusiastic performances of a Brazilian Samba dance and The Can Can were enjoyed by parents, teachers and pupils. The pupils also performed poetry which they had written during Literacy lessons.


During January children from 2nd to 5th grade in Canterbury Maspalomas attended a fun filled sports event in Playa del Ingles. Children from many schools also joined in on many activities organised by the ayuntamiento. It was an excellent event and like the previous one last term, Canterbury School won 7 out of 8 of their events.


We are busy preparing our annual camping trip for P5. The pupils will be accompanied by at least two teachers per year group and the camping organisation, Canaventur, also provides their own monitor for every 10 pupils. Canaventur has a reputation among the local authorities and schools on the island for the high quality of its outdoor activities. The pupils will stay ...

Two sixth form pupils have just obtained outstanding academic recognition. Edward Perdomo, an Upper Sixth student in 2005-6, has been awarded a prize by Cambridge University of 1000 pounds per year for three years for their best A level student in the whole of Spain. Ágata Mata. an Upper Sixth pupil this year is the winner of the Chemistry Olympic for the province of the Canary Islands. In April she will take part ...


On Friday 16th February both the Infant and Junior Departments celebrated Carnival! All the children looked fantastic when they came to school dressed in their costumes. The Infant children really enjoyed the clown because he made them laugh a lot. The older children spent the afternoon dancing and playing games. Thank you to all the teachers for their hard work and entering into the spirit of things by dressing up!


On Wednesday 17th January, K3C performed an assembly for the children at Ruben Dario and their parents. They told the story of ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’ which they had studied last term.
The children really enjoyed using their hands and bodies to do actions as they told the story.

On Thursday 1st February our S6 pupils went to the conference hall at the University of Las Palmas to listen to an informative talk about the University in general and on April will attend an Open Day when they will find out more details about the courses they might be interested in following. So that they have as much information as possible to enable them to make a sensible choice of career, we have also invited the following private universities to give talks throughout their final year from September 2006 onwards: The European University of Madrid, ‘ESADE’, ‘Antonio de Nebrija’ University (Madrid), ‘Pontifia Comillas’ University (Madrid), ...

The School web page is increasingly becoming an important communication tool for parents and pupils. In January 2007 it has already received more than the symbolic number of 10.000 visits (11,469 in January 2007). This figure is double the visits received in the same month in 2006. S1 have been studying energy resources in Science. They know that fossil fuels may soon run out and we need to find alternatives that are easy to get, and do not pollute the environment.

In October the S1 students, along with Mr King and Mr Clarke, went on a coastal investigation to help them identify coastal erosion and deposition features.

S3 and S4 went on separate trips to San Mateo as part of their Geography IGCSE.

S5 went on two field trips this term to help them understand the physical environment.
