2006-2007


S1 students at The Canterbury School have been studying “Self Portraits”. They have looked at the early Graeco-Roman Egyptian Mummy Paintings c200AD. These are paintings created with encaustic paint (wax and pigment) on wood. The portraits were attached to mummies so that the person’s soul would exist in the after-life. If the painting looked like the person then they would exist for ever more! The paintings were wrapped with strips of sugar paper to look like the bandages of the mummies.

P6 have been learning about the art and beliefs of the Australian Aborigines. The Australian Aborigines believe that their drawings, dances and songs have power, and that even the world was ”sung” into existence by their ancestors. S2 Art Gallery: CUBISM IN CANTERBURY SCHOOL.

Our S2 pupils have been investigating Cubism. The drawings in this gallery are made up of preliminary sketches with which the pupils have begun to paint a cubist portrait. To make the portraits the pupils started from a photocopy which they cut up, and then with the help of a mirror to give three distinct viewpoints, made a careful collage. The pupils found the whole exercise entertaining and amusing.

S4 IGCSE Art: Self Image.


The S4 students have started this year with a project on “Self Image”. They are studying how artists represent themselves in self portraits.
The students are researching the following artists, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Frida Khalo, Durer, Lucien Freud, David Hockney, ancient self portraits, portraits from other cultures, Francis Bacon and Photographic portraits. They have completed in-depth visual studies of ...


The Art Department clubs started 2 weeks ago and we are making Christmas presents, crackers and cards in the Christmas club on Tuesdays and on Wednesdays we are making paper sculptures in the Origami club.
In the Christmas club the P6 and S1 students have been making pom pom bag jewellery and soon we shall be making our own erasers!
